Danilo Andrés is a choreographer/vocalist & visual artist based in Berlin/Vienna. Their work in visual, sonic and performance art has always been interrelated by incorporating multiple forms of media, such as sculptural headpieces, costumes, and video. Most recently, in 2023, they presented their solo installation BICHO RARO at Sophiensaele Berlin. They create mainly solo pieces and use their multidimensional skills as a visual artist, performer, and choreographer to research the development of the body in a queer context. Since 2024, Danilo Andrés is teaching their class Practices of Animation of the Matter in Tanzquartier Vienna, and has been awarded with the Pina Bausch Fellowship 2024, supported by brut Vienna.
PNEUMA – Guttural Voice & Dance
Danilo Andrés
The two-day workshop consists of a combination of movement meditation and extreme vocal practices such as growling, guttural voice, lamentations and scrams. Danilo Andrés will share dynamic breathing exercises with the participants to support the voice work, and on a creative level they will stimulate them to create their own mantras and vocal incantations to animate the dancing body.
The choreographer and vocalist associate the guttural voice with the primal, the spiritual and the supernatural, and they recognize this as a context to be explored by the choreographic and visual art as well. In many cultures, it is believed that this type of vocalisation enables people to connect with energies that lie beyond the human, linking the singer with the divine, the ancestral or the unknown. The raspy, deep sound of the guttural voice can evoke strength and mystery and is valued for its ability to touch human emotions on an instinctive level.
In their explorations with the voice, Danilo Andrés is particularly interested in the twist between horror and humour: their goal is to create an energety-charged space in which the boundaries between ecstasy and exorcism, pleasure and pain, illness and enlightenment, humour and horror become blurred.
This workshop takes place at the invitation of Tanzhaus accomplice Joseph Baan.
