Soraya Leila Emery, Neil Höhener

Im Rahmen von TanzPlan Ost: TPO Tour 2024

Neil Höhener: An Act
In the solo performance An Act, inspired by his autobiographical experiences and physicality, Neil Höhener explores his own identity, body, and their fluidity. Engaging in a dialogue with various aspects of his personality, Neil seeks constant transformation. In a detached, at times surreal and dreamlike stage setting, he delves into the feeling of obsession, revealing vulnerability and playfulness. His actions lead to a performative deconstruction of fixed categories. An Act is a dance-driven search for the indefinable.

Soraya Leila Emery: TURN ON
In TURN ON, Soraya Leila Emery examines female pleasure from a feminist perspective. By blending dance and grappling techniques, narratives surrounding female sexuality, bodily autonomy, and empowerment are reimagined. The three performers move through the space both individually and together, creating captivating tableaux vivants with their movements and gazes: intertwined and sliding over each other, their bodies vibrate, resist, and soften in an obsessive search for endless repetitions that lead to exhaustion and vibrating silence. This is a play of constantly shifting, ambivalent power dynamics. An act of reclaiming their bodies. A struggle for their right to pleasure.

TanzPlan Ost Tour 2024
Over the course of a year, the two TPO Associated Artists, Soraya Leila Emery and Neil Höhener, each created a contemporary dance piece. Through an extensive workshop and outreach program that accompanied the process, they periodically opened their creative processes to the regional community. The two completed pieces will now be presented as a double bill on three stages in Eastern Switzerland as part of the TPO Tour.

For over 10 years, TanzPlan Ost has been promoting local contemporary dance and fostering cross-regional exchange. The TPO Tour marks the conclusion of the second three-part cycle, consisting of the TPO ChoreoLab, TPO Associated Artist Program, and TPO Tour.

Soraya Leila Emery

Soraya Leila Emery is a Swiss-Moroccan choreographer based in Zurich. In 2023/24, as a TanzPlan Ost Associated Artist, she created her group piece TURN ON. In her current work, Soraya Leila explores themes of desire through an intersectional, decolonial, and feminist lens, providing a platform for MENA* dancers. Her earlier works questioned the preservation and transmission of cultural identity and the representation of the female Arab body. She earned her Master's degree in Choreography from ZHdK Zurich in 2024, graduated as a contemporary dancer from SEAD in 2017, and from CFPArts Geneva in 2014.
